2006 & 2007 National League CY Young Winners: Brandon Webb and Jake Peavy

I will be the first to note that Brandon Webb and Jake Peavy were deserving of the Cy Young Award. Both pitchers were lights out their respected seasons and dominated hitter after hitter every night they took the mound. Webb and Peavy have bright futures ahead and will most likely have many more trophies to hang up on their wall as they progress through their career. Though, being a close-watch Atlanta Braves fan, I noticed every bit and piece of the team and could smell a disheartening cycle unfold a mile away. Expecially after seeing the act(s) unfold as clockwork year after year, I realized something should be done to convey outrage on behalf of a true Atlanta Braves fan. I noticed when the best pitcher on the team, John Smoltz, was un-supported by his Braves batters everytime he was called to take the mound. Now obviously, he faced the opposing team's hitters, but from watching how the Braves batters fared when Smoltz made his start, you could have very well said he was facing his own team. Looking at the numbers, please take a look at how John Smoltz fared compared to the CY Young Winners in 2006 and 2007. As you will obviously see, John Smoltz did everything he could on his end, but the uncontrollable was out of his reach. If only the Braves batting line-up hit like they regularly did those two years, what additional awards John Smoltz could have had under his belt....

  • In 2006-2007, who was at the receiving end of the Braves league-high 29 blown saves...
  • In 2006-2007, Who suffered the most statistically from these late-inning meltdowns...
  • Presently, Who continues to suffer from a lack of run support and/or poor relief pitching in late innings
